Solution
The Kimberley Process (KP) is a certification scheme that was created to eliminate the conflict of diamonds in Africa. It was started in 2003 by Global Witness to expose the violence and conflict that the diamonds bring in African Nations. The process requires governments of Africa to certify that rough diamonds from their region are conflict-free. To ensure the safety of these rough diamonds, KP officers guard the shipments until they arrive at the place they are sold to the companies.
Although the process is not fool proof it has significantly decreased the amount of blood diamonds in circulation. $125 million worth of diamonds were legally shipped from Sierra Leone in 2006. In the 90's almost none were legally shipped from there. In 2010 a total of 75 governments were taking part in the Kimberley Process. These countries are only allowed to trade with each other and require a certificate for each shipment.
